Barcelona - Las Ramblas

Monday, January 14, 2008

I spent my day touring Barcelona...walking Las Ramblas to one end, really looking at everything in more detail.

Today all the florists were out, and I talk lots of shots of flowers, which are in another section on their own.

The plant shops had everything: seeds, bulbs, plants, bushes, trees, cut flowers and bouquets.

I also took lots of photos of the 'live' statues...people who held their poses for photographs and money...they were quite fabulous...you can see them in more detail, also in another section.

I was amazed to find people actually selling pets and birds, including iguanas and different kinds of chickens.

Everywhere I've looked in this city there are tons of parked mopeds and motorcycles. I guess this is a major format for transportation. Apparently there are more of them per capita in Barcelona than in any other European city.

Bicyles are also popular and Barcelona has been accommodating by providing over 100 km of bike paths.

There were local musicians, and people making motorcycles out of pop tins, and of course crowds of people and all of us surrounded by fabulous buildings.

I heard the Ramblas was from original a dry river that took the water from the mountains to the sea after heavy rainfalls. Rambla means "where the river flows" in arabic. Symbolically Las ramblas is also the river where all visitors flow. Now the Ramblas is a long street with many restaurants, Barcelona hotels, cafes, the street is from Playa de Catalunya to the Statue of Colombus. You find here terasses, people selling, street artists and a lot of tourists. Just take a walk over this boulevard to the harbor and coastline of Barcelona.
